| - After an especially grueling work day, my better half picked me up from the office, and we decided to grab a bite. He'd been with someone at Murray Avenue Grill who had eaten a Reuben and said it looked really good. Maybe the best he'd seen in town. Well, after a crappy day, a GOOD Reuben would be kind of one of my best comfort food treats. I'd had a few other meals at the Grill, but have become a bit gun-shy about trying strange Pittsburgh Reubens. 'Strange' usually ends up being the appropriate word to describe them.
So off we went to the Hill of Squirrels, and entered the land of Murray Avenue and its Grill.
I ordered the Reuben with a side of slaw, and he ordered a salad with chicken and the silly french fries on top (damn you Primanti).
I have to say...of all of the Reubens I've swallowed in this burgh...the tie is now down to Murray Avenue Grill, and Big Jim's. Both of them reach the 99% mark for being on par with a New York actual Reuben.
The substance of Big Jim's was right up there with a New York Reuben, but they refuse to butter and grill it like they're supposed to be. Packed full of meat (about two inches thick) and the usual Swiss cheese, thousand Island dressing, and sauerkraut. But having to gnaw through a baked piece of hard crunchy dark rye bread killed it.
At Murray Avenue Grill, the bread is perfect, marbled rye, buttered and grilled. The kraut, cheese and thousand island dressing are the right balance. But a bit skimpy on the meat. Good flavor on the meat, and actually juicy (which is a HUGE problem in the burgh...it's usually dry and flavorless) but again, the lack of meat took it to a 99%.
However, if I had to choose between the two, Murray Avenue wins hands down. If they doubled the meat, I would be a regular for Reubens and BAM...they'd be at the 100% authentic New York Reuben level.
The service staff has always been very nice and efficient. The atmosphere is somewhat more upscale, yet not at all pretentious. The prices are a little high, but a Squirrel Hill landlord probably has something to do with that being a necessity.
If the price of the sandwich had matched the meat ratio, this would have been a five star.
But it's finally good to know that there is one place in da burgh worth returning to for a Reuben.
