| - I like the Westin. The lobby is adequate, rooms are predictable and safe. If you love beige, you'll love the interior decorator's style. Views: Nonexistent (it is Charlotte after all, what are you expecting to see, suburbs?). Water was hot, beds are cozy and clean. I didn't see a single cockroach.
Like any large metro hotel you'll see a interesting variety of people - business peeps for a conference, kids on a tour all wearing the same coordinated clothes, and random weirdos (like me). And of course on the right weekend when there is a game - lots of Cowboys fans. People watching is a sport in itself - all the tarted up ladies (welcome to The South y'all) and kids freaking out.
Lets talk about the bar. The first night I went I got served twice with STRONG drinks (negroni, then gin & tonic), and only $10 bucks. I'm gonna like this place, I thought - I wonder if the locals come here knowing the drinks are strong. But alas... the SECOND night I ordered a whisky sour and it was basically sour mix. When I subsequently ordered a double it came back with a shot floating in the top and... wait for it.... the charge was $24. Yep, you read that right - they charged me for TWO drinks (and for some reason added on a $2/drink charge).
I asked for snacks, and they served me some peanut things that were wet. I guess the dish was still wet from the dishwasher. So it was soggy snacks.
And finally, one of my drinks was served in a hot glass (straight from the washer??) So it's quickly melting and getting warm. Bartending 101 dudes. I knew the score because the night before a woman asked for them to repour her martini in a COLD glass. Apparently her glass was hot. At the time I was thinking - what a b*tch, but then it happened to me. Sigh.
They also charge for internet usage, because apparently the owners think it's 1995.
I didn't stay at the restaurant. My friends said it was $26 for a breakfast buffet. Ouch.
Parking will add another $20 / night.
These little things added up. The Westin has this vibe of trying to be a nice fancy uppity hotel - people waiting to call cabs for you (we used Uber, half the price), and when my bill was emailed to me they called it a "guest folio" instead of a "bill".... all fancyshmancypantsy - but the thing is they miss the details like a competent bar, and they nickel and dime you for things like internet... in 2015.
Pros: Clean, predictable rooms, fast elevator, people watching.
Cons: Bar is hot mess, nickled and dimed for fees, beige.
