  • Well, I'm visiting Charlotte with my boyfriend and ended up eating at 5Church per the interest of a friend of ours. I was hesitant, given the yelp ratings and expected an overpriced experience with mediocre food, but I was thrilled to be proven wrong! We made a reservation Saturday afternoon for a Saturday evening table for 4, and got a table at a decent time with no problem. Sure, the place is trendy, the downstairs area was popping. That's not really my thing. I like to eat, not party. But hey! That didn't take away from the deliciousness of the food. We started with the pork belly spring rolls and gnocchi. Holy hell. They were FANTASTIC. The spring rolls come with 2 per order. So, we had to get two orders. The boys both ordered the short ribs with shallot jus and mashed potatoes. My friend and I ordered the scallops on creamy polenta. The dish came with 4 large pieces of scallops. And was definitely filling compared to most scallop dishes, but... Me being me... I eat surprisingly more than most 95lbs females. I cleaned my plate up and ordered an additional pork belly spring roll app to fill me up! The other girl seemed filled with her scallop dish. The polenta was creamy and rich, the perfect complement to the light, fresh seared scallops. My mouth is watering just thinking about it. I tried my boyfriend's braised short ribs, jus, and mashed potatoes... And if I wasn't so perfectly satisfied with my scallops, I would have had major food envy. I cook short ribs a LOT. In fact, because I obsess over it in the kitchen, I can appreciate a well made braised short rib. Tender, fatty and falling apart. The shallot jus adding even more delicate juice and flavor. And the silky mashed potatoes just soaking it all up. Sigh. I might have to go back just to have my own plate of it. Then came dessert. At this point, I'd eaten more than anyone at the table. But the lemon creme brûlée tart (if I recall correctly)... Our waitress lit up when I asked about it. And it was fantastic!! Not overly tart to where you're puckering up. Not overly sweet to overcompensate for the tartness. Perfect texture and complimentary crust. My boyfriend who despises lemon treats absolutely loved it. And the s'mores dessert. Which I wasn't expecting to be as delicious as it was also had me eating past my limit even AFTER the lemon tart. Fantastic service from our waitress who was kind, honest and attentive. Fantastic experience all in all. And possibly my favorite meal in Charlotte yet!
