| - Ok overall, though there were a few things not so great with this rental. I am a long time Hertz Presidents Circle member that recently changed to National Emerald Club Executive and have had few rentals with National now. Overall I am liking National better than Hertz, but none of them are perfect.
From the Phoenix airport, you take a shuttle bus to the Rental Car complex. The nice thing is you take a generic shuttle bus and don't have to wait for a National shuttle like there are at other airports. That was nice overall I think, though it does cause the shuttles to fill up faster this way.
Once at the complex you go the Emerald Isle if you have that destination in your rental and can bypass the counter. They had a lot of variety of autos available so that was nice.
I saw a Toyota 4Runner and always wanted one of those so we went to it first. After turning it on though the dash said it had a flat tire. Sure enough, there was a tire that looked really low. Didn't want to deal with the delay waiting for a fix so we tried a different car.
This was a BMW X3 and we took that. It was Ok, but upon driving off I noticed that the gas tank was only about 2/3 full....aaargggh. They charge you if you don't return it full, but apparently, they are perfectly happy to give you a car without a full tank.
The other negative to note with this location compared to other National ones is that they have a bunch of extra fees and taxes here. Our rental was about $214, but there was an extra $140 in fees and taxes! Stadium Surcharge, Customer Facility Charge, Trans Priv Tax, and many more. I checked some past bills from other National locations and did not see all of these fees listed so some of these seem unique to this location.
Other than that, leaving the facility with the rental and returning it were both easy and we didn't have to wait long. After you return the car make sure you get on the proper shuttle to get back to the airport (they are marked for the different terminals at PHX). Thanks for reading.
