  • WORST dining experience I've ever had! Let me just say I'm in the restaurant industry and I feel like I have a pretty realistic expectation of what a dining experience should entail. Prompt greeting by host, seated reasonably quickly, pleasant and prompt greeting from server, hot food hot cold food cold, order taken and delivered as ordered, server meets needs efficiently and check is dropped and picked up and processed quickly. It's not really that difficult and while many aspects go into creating this dining experience and not all can be controlled it shouldn't be a total wreck. That being said.... We were at the Mesa Arts Center for a competition on Mother's Day. We decided to try the Bistro. We walked up and were greeted by the frenzied host/busser/brother of someone that worked there. He explained they were having a Mother's Day Brunch for $13.99 per person and children were $13.50. At the time I thought it was weird that it was $0.50 cheaper for kids but I didn't question it. So we agreed and sat on the only table clean on the patio. It was about 15 minutes before we were finally approached by the server. He was very nice and took our drink orders and told us to go ahead to the buffet. It was another 15 minutes for drink to come out (2 Ice T's, and a kids soda) and when he returned he did not have sweetener for the Tea which I had asked for upon placing my order and we did not have silverware either. Needless to say even after asking a second time for it I got up and found some sitting on another table and found silverware in the host stand myself. Now the buffet... it consisted of cold cuts and cheese platters both that were not being iced or refrigerated in any way. Several buffet containers with bunson burners that were not lit and the food was lukewarm or cold, bread that was left out to harden and the dessert section with cold, small snow crab and shrimp cocktail on ice surrounded by cheese cake???? Like I said I work in a restaurant and the cold holding and hot holding temperatures of the food being served would have been grounds for the health department to shut them down. I let our server know that the food was cold. He apologized and said that they were now relighting the bunson burners??? You know.. because reheating them to lukewarm instead of cold won't make me sick. At that point we just asked for the check. When I opened the book I almost fainted! $94.77!!! Like I mentioned earlier we were told $13.99 per person. We were charged $32.99 for my husband, myself, $13.50 for my daughter and then drinks were additional. Now I've eaten as some very nice very expensive buffets before and I have no problem paying $32.99 for a buffet that actually has the food worth paying $32.99 on it. But the real problem was that we were told $13.99 by the host!!! Fortunately another mom and her daughter were sitting nearby and had been told the same thing so we were able to back each other up. Our server confronted the host loudly across the restaurant and the host turned to us and yelled at us that he told us $32.99. After the screaming match the server brought the check back and it was corrected to be $13.99 for my husband and myself and the just removed my daughters meal entirely. While I appreciate them correcting the check I will never go back to this restaurant again and I was just thankful that I didn't get food poisoning... maybe the health department should pay them a visit.
