  • The Eliza Furnace Trail is also know as the "Jail Trail' as it passes by the Allegheny County jail. It starts in Greenfield and winds it way downtown. We picked up the trail from the downtown area and went as far as the Hot Metal Bridge, as we were completing our 16 mile run. This trail is wide, paved and fairly flat. Not much elevation change at all. It is good for runners/walkers/bikers a like. When leaving downtown and heading towards Greenfield, the trail splits the Parkway East. It is extremely loud due to all the traffic going by. As you go further, the noise lessens, but you still have the parkway on one side and 2nd Avenue on the other. There is also minimal to no shade at all, so if you do not like running in the sun, this is not the best trail. For the most part, the trail was filled with runners, dog walkers and bikers. There were two people who seemed out of place. Overreact much? Maybe, but the one person, who definitely seemed out of place, was walking with a can of spray mace in his hand. Not trying to raise any concern, just be aware if you venture out. Overall the trail is an easy run and a nice option for being downtown.
