  • So I've been here maybe four times? Once was for lunch and the other three times was for dinner. One of the dinners, it was during happy hour so we got to try some of the happy hour items. District One has a very modern feel to it. They have a bar at the back, booths in the front, and tables in the middle. Their menu consists of Asian fusion with a few traditional Vietnamese dishes, such as pho and bun bue hue. On my most recent visit, I got to try a few things on the happy hour menu. The Serrano pepper wings were pretty good. It was deep fried nice and crispy on the outside yet very juicy on the inside. The flavor of the Serrano pepper doesn't necessarily soak through as much because the peppers were way spicier than the wings, but I suppose that's expected for something that's deep fried. We also got a dozen of their happy hour oysters, which at the time were blue points. I can't say they do their oysters very well because it was dry. There was no brine to accompany it; therefore, you HAVE to squeeze lemon on it AND use cocktail sauce. I typically just eat it with lemon but that was not a choice here. I probably wouldn't get oysters here again. My friends LOVE their Vietnamese Beef Carpaccio but I don't mirror their feelings for the dish. They doused the beef in so much oil that I feel like that's the only thing I can taste! My friends also got their Cajun garlic fries, which had really good flavor. The only problem was that one batch had more garlic flavor than the second batch so the inconsistency surely shines through. For their pho, I have tried their oxtail pho and rib eye pho. I must say, District One is possibly my favorite place for pho. It is not the cheapest pho in town but it's got the best flavor to their broth. I didn't care for the oxtail though -- it was just three oxtail bones in there. I'd rather have the oxtail a different way but it was good nonetheless. I've also tried their Mekong River Style Noodle Soup, which was only so-so for me. They put a ton of stuff in there and perhaps some people like that. It's just not my thing though. They filled it with bean sprouts and a ton of meat. I prefer to control the bean sprouts on my own like I do with pho ;P Their garlic noodles, however, were very delicious. It's got good flavor and it's simple. Their oxtail fried rice is so popular. It's one of the dishes that you have got to try and, well, I didn't care for it. That was the first thing I tried when I first went to District One and I gotta say, I can't even remember it. I love clay pot rice so I had to try theirs. It's slightly different from the Chinese version because they mixed in the soy sauce for you already into the rice and frankly, they put too much. The dish was a tad too salty for me. I liked how they would put whole cloves of garlic in there though :) Their grilled squid is pretty good though. It was very soft and not chewy at all! I'm not a huge fan of squid but I would definitely order it again when I go. The service was decent. I wouldn't say that it was amazing service but it wasn't absolute garbage either. Overall, I would justify District One with a 3 star rating. Don't get me wrong -- it's not a BAD rating. It's good. But out of allllll the stuff I've tried, only like three dishes stuck out for me: pho, garlic noodles, and grilled squid. I would definitely come back for those three dishes haha!
