| - I will NEVER give this business my money ever again! I have had not 1 or 2, but now 3 bad experiences here! I believe it is run by a husband & wife? The woman is fine, but the guy is very rude to me every time! I have given this place hundreds if not thousands of dollars of my money as a semi regular customer since moving to Pittsburgh. I live in Squirrel Hill less then a mile away and shop here about once a month sometimes more. I don't know if this guy/owner does not like white people or if it's because I am gay? Which would make no sense considering they are in Shadyside a very gay neighborhood. In fact they are on Ellsworth Avenue the gayest street in Pittsburgh w/ all of its rainbow flags, gay businesses and multiple gay bars! This guy should not be in customer service if he hates his customers! His facial expressions, body language and rude remarks leave a bad taste in my mouth and I'm sick of it. I should not feel uncomfortable going into a business! I left after buying my groceries quite upset today! Don't even think about asking a question! Which is ridiculous considering this is America not Japan and most people do not speak or read Japanese! You can tell his annoyance that this dumb American white guy has a question! And I don't think it boils down to cultural differences or a misunderstanding! When I was an international student in Sydney I went to college w/ the friendliest Japanese girl ever! I love Japanese culture! The food, fashion, horror movies everything! Tokyo is my #1 travel destination I have yet to visit! Usually mom & pop family owned small businesses are very welcoming! And will even order special items in for you if they don't currently sell them if possible. More then happy to assist you finding a product or answering a question knowing you may be less familiar with a brand or product! Not only will you NOT get a warm "Irasshaimase!" when you enter but there will be no "Smile, Hello, Thank you or Have a good day!" just nothing except a feeling of negative energy! First time he was nasty I asked about a bento box. I was buying 1 for my Singaporean husband and was considering getting another for myself as well. One of the little squares had what appeared to be spaghetti/noodles w/ a dry red sauce. I politely asked what it was? Mainly because the descriptions are vague and I wanted to know what the mixed in bits were. As I have seen at Japanese restaurants Italian pasta/noodles served w/ tomato sauce that have roe (fish eggs) or bonito flakes mixed in. He responded along the lines "YOU DON'T KNOW WHAT SPAGHETTI IS? You never saw spaghetti before?" I told him obviously yes, however I would like to know what the sauce is? Specifically is it vegetarian? What are those bits mixed in? Ignored! Then today I asked if the raw blue fin tuna they were selling in the fridge on its own where they sell by weight fish like salmon steaks was sashimi grade? He responds "YES! There is a sign! Isn't that what it says???" God forbid you have poor eyesight! Mind you it does not say on the actual package. And there are signs posted all over some in English some in Japanese and the sign he was referring to was old & faded in a spot easy to miss in this small crowded store. Lastly when I checked out he was again very rude and started mumbling in Japanese and just being offensive! Honestly the place is overpriced though I don't even care about that and the selection leaves much for me personally to be desired! Same boring variety never anything new! They never get what I like! I love the online store napajapan! They get the newest most interesting Japanese snacks! Drinks, chips, candy/chocolate, Oreos & all the fun stuff! American brands like Doritos, Cheetos, Pringles, Bubblicious and Pepsi, but in the coolest Japanese flavors we don't have in the USA! Tokyo Japanese Food store does not get any of the made in Japan American branded items! Nowadays you can find all the sauces, seasonings, cuts of meat and noodles at Whole Foods or Giant Eagle Market District. Or the other Asian grocers in the Strip District and elsewhere! Even Walmart has ethnic isles! If you still can't find what you want go online! If you want the limited selection of prepared food here 1/2 the time it's sold out by lunch anyway. Oh and lately I should mention when my Asian husband goes or Asian people check out they ask "Do you have a loyalty card?" Never in the probably 50 times I went did they ask me! Guess I'm not valued enough or maybe they don't want me to come back!!! Only shopped here to begin w/ as I was somewhat limited in options, but honestly even when I didn't encounter the mean dude I still left disappointed compared to the Japanese store I shopped at when I lived in Sydney! That guy needs to have more respect considering he chose to come here and this city/state/country allowed him to have a business! Maybe his business model is to survive and serve non westerners?
