  • My partner and I were looking for something different to do and decided to pay a visit to UnderTow. UnderTow is located at the bottom of a staircase which is smack dab in the middle of Sip Beer & Coffee, which I thought was very interesting. When we went down below, the bar was set up as if we were all sitting in the hull of a ship, complete with portholes that showed animations of the ocean as if we were really sailing. I noticed the soundtrack coordinated with the animations in the portholes, which was really cool (e.g. when we were sailing through a "storm," the music was ominous and turbulent, but it turned peaceful and quiet when we were "docked" at a harbor). ANYWAYS they have a very extensive cocktail menu. The menu was divided into two sections - the first was dedicated to UnderTow's original cocktails and the second was for classic tiki drinks such as the Zombie. We opted to order only from the original cocktail section. Smoking Cannon ($13; bourbon, rum, French Amer Amontillado sherry, pineapple, Arizona bitters, cinnamon smoke) - Smoky (as expected), but in a good way. I don't know what Arizona bitters is supposed to taste like so I'm not sure if it was present in the drink. Overall, I really liked this. It comes in a gorgeous big snifter and made me feel fancy AF. Smoking Idol ($14; Japanese whisky, ginger, bergamot, Islay scotch, pineapple, orgeat, passion fruit, peach liqueur, mint) - Fruity, light, and easy to drink. Almost perfume-y due to the bergamot. Sea Wench ($12; rhum, Earl Grey-infused bergamot vodka, orange curacao, Italian amaro, pineapple, lime, honey) - Surprisingly I didn't really like this. I thought the flavors all competed with each other and it ended up tasting very strong and not in a good way. Trade for Passage ($16; rum aged 12 years, dark Jamaican rum, rhum, apricot liqueur, creme de cacao, papaya, lime, nutmeg, mint) - This comes in a tall glass that looks fairly intimidating but it all went down pretty fast (haha). This would be a good drink if you're someone who doesn't like to taste the alcohol but wants to turn up. PS - I can see this bar getting crowded very quickly as the space is very small. We went on a Monday night and didn't need reservations but I'd recommend one.
