  • I've been amazed by this place since I first visited it in 2004 and continued to do so in various intervals since. This place has an amazing selection. The jazz is of very obscure names (but you're guaranteed to find Coletrane's "Live at Birdland" or any number of Sun-Ra). He has a great selection or world music (especially African). He even has some Eugene Chadbourne (and if I'm not mistaken he's one of half a dozen stores I've conversed with-most of them from college towns-about Eugene Chadbourne's annoying tendency to "insist" his selections at certain prices). He does get a hold of many odd compilations or box sets you might not have known existed. The place is very cramped. There is one thing that bothers me: I've seen the guy running it get rather more cold and withdrawn over the years. I think he needs encouragement. The last three times I visited I was pricing lots of titles (many of them he keeps locked away in a cabinet) and weighing option (holiday presents mostly), and he seemed gruff. When I finally came in looking for something I asked for on the phone, he couldn't have been cheerier about the sale. My advice to him: don't get salty, there's always imminent sales ahead with that selection. It just takes folks a while to get up the funds to buy stuff that good at the prices you are asking. Expect a little window-shopping. Think of it as foreplay. Advice to anyone else: you will find something you are looking for if you browse wisely; so, cheer up the dude running the operation.
