  • I went in this morning to get routine blood work done. I don't have insurance, so I pay for my labwork out of pocket. Generally, my testing costs anywhere from $80 to $200, depending on the lab I go to and what needs to be tested. I got there at 7:55 AM and I checked in. A few minutes later, the receptionist called me up and asked for my lab order. I said that my doctor had faxed it in last week. She looked through her files and couldn't find it, so I called my doctor's office and asked them to re-fax the order. I sat down and waited. About 10 minutes later, there was a shift change, and a new receptionist came to the front desk. An hour and a half later, I still hadn't been called, and people who had arrived after me had come and gone. I went back up to the front and explained to the new receptionist what was going on. She checked the fax machine, and the fax had been sitting there for over an hour unnoticed. She picked up the order, typed some stuff into her computer, and told me that it would cost $738 to get the testing done. I said that I wasn't going to pay that, so she gave me the fax and I went on my way. I got online, and I ordered the exact same tests myself directly from Labcorp. The cost was $210. I don't know how the receptionist came up with the extra $528, but I'll be showing up with my paperwork to a different location tomorrow.
