| - Update: If you want insight into how this place operates, look at the sardonic, unapologetic, and passive aggressive responses the owner gives to ratings he deems unfair (basically all the one or two star ratings). Why would you want to spend money at a place that doesn't care whether you enjoyed yourself?
Review:
My boyfriend and I live a few miles down the road and we are always looking for places to eat that are a bike ride away. The Pig & Pickle has been on our list of places to try for awhile, so we decided to drop in tonight. While my boyfriend was locking up our bikes, I grabbed a table. Water was put on the table right away and a server came right over to take my drink order. I told her I wanted to wait until my boyfriend sat down and to please come back in a minute or two. About a minute later, my boyfriend came in. It took another ten minutes for someone to finally remember to stop by and take our drink orders. Before we gave the server our drink orders, I asked him if I could swap the Swiss cheese on the Cuban sandwich for cheddar or provolone (I HATE Swiss cheese--I know some people love it, but in my opinion, the smell and taste completely detracts from whatever I'm trying to eat). I made sure to ask before we ordered anything because I saw (in very small print) that substitution requests would be ignored, which I found a little strange. The server looked really stressed when I made the request and said he would have to ask the kitchen. When I glanced over at the open kitchen, there were two guys doing nothing--one was even on his phone. Anyway, when the server came back, he told me they would be happy to take the cheese off, but I would not be permitted to have any other cheese on the sandwich. You'd think for a $14 sandwich, you could have whatever kind of cheese you want (with the exception of goat cheese, of course), especially since the substitution is an easy swap and they weren't busy. I guess they really meant it when they said all substitutions would be ignored. Consequently, my boyfriend and I were pretty annoyed. When a restaurant won't honor substitution requests of any kind, they better be world renowned or a Zagat rated five-stars. Otherwise, I'm just going to assume they are lazy or pretentious weirdos, who think they know better than the customer. Consequently, we left and went down the street to the Mexican restaurant, The Blind Pig. I ended up having a delicious, authentic Cuban sandwich, made according to my preferences, all for only $10! Extremely serendipitous!! Obviously, we won't be returning to the Pig & Pickle.
