  • In Scottsdale for a conference, it appears that the Phoenix-Scottsdale area is (I am repeatedly told) *not* a place for fine dining. But we found a small, local, and highly recommended restaurant that -- if we're ever back in Arizona (politics notwithstanding) -- we're definitely returning to! FnB is a small place tucked inside a little courtyard of shops off 5th St. With an frequently changing menu composed of an assortment of about 10 appetizers, 5-6 sides and only 4-6 entrées, the menu may be small, but never felt limited. Focused on locally sourced food wherever possible, the food was excellent -- far more "exciting" and "intriguing" (and with much better service; the waitstaff here is excellent!) than the far more expensive meal we had the night before. The wine list has about 25-30 different wines from local Arizona producers, as well as wines from elsewhere, but we stuck with the wines from Arizona (OK, one from Washington). We started off with a Dos Cabezas white blend, "Meskoli," that was light, crisp, fragrant and very nice. We then shifted north to Washington State for one of my favorite wines, the DeLille Chaleur Estate White, a Sauvignon Blanc-Sémillon blend that never fails to satisfy. The Dos Cabezas Aguileon, a Tempranillo blend, was truly excellent - a wine I'd buy here in Berkeley, if I could find it. FnB is one of those neighborhood gems that you just treasure and try to keep to yourself . . . and your best friends. If I lived here, I'd be here every week! WONDERFUL!
