| - We needed to acquire health insurance on our own (as in, not through an employer). It's crazy trying to wade through all of the choices that are available. Trish C at Nevada Benefits knows all of the companies, their different plans and types of coverage - takes time to listen to your individual situation and then helps you choose which type of coverage and plan is right for you.
I first met Trish in August 2013 when our COBRA medical coverage was ending from Tim's previous job. She was super nice and patient, explained everything very clearly and really helped us sort out our options. We decided that a short-term "catastrophic" type of policy would cover us for six months until either our job situation changed or until the new government insurance plans kicked in. The six month policy, instead of a long-term policy with all of its hoops to jump through, saved us thousands of dollars in premiums and a ton of time in medical questionnaires and the qualification process. The best thing is, we didn't use the insurance the whole six months. We were covered if something major happened and were prepared to cover the expenses if it was something minor - but nothing medical ever happened - nothing at all ! It was a roll of the dice that we wouldn't encounter minor medical issues or a broken bone or something in these six months but it worked out really well.
Now more recently, with Tim still being an independent contract employee and not being under the umbrella of a company that provides health insurance, Trish has again helped sort out the differences between companies and plans (and different levels of coverage in the different plans!) I had a ton of random and specific questions and she always responded quickly to emails and phone calls - would email me different breakdowns in plans, along with the prices -listened to me talk about the differences and steered me in the direction that was right for us based on what level of risk we felt comfortable in taking. She treated me so nicely and was even more patient than the first time - is professional and yet would joke around with me at the same time. Now we have a health insurance plan that will work out for us until a change in job situation - it's good for peace of mind for sure. The plan we chose is definitely way more expensive than the short-term plan (and some of the long-term plans !) but it looks to be something that will cover us and protect us not just for emergencies or major major things, but for minor and even preventive care/screenings as well.
Without insurance coverage provided by a job, the cost is all ours. It would be really tempting to try to live with more minimal health insurance - but with no crystal ball to know what will happen in the future, there's no way we can do this. It's a real maze if you've always had coverage from work and then suddenly you choose to go out on your own. USE THIS COMPANY ! Trish and the rest of the Nevada Benefits staff are very friendly, easy to talk with, very experienced and confident and really enjoy what they do. . . and it really comes across in the way they interact. It has been so great working with them.
