| - This place is yum-may! I've been looking for a pho place near downtown. I'd become disenchanted with Rice Paper ever since they started charging $3 more for 2 "individual" bowls than the cost of one large that most people split. Seriously?
Any who, this is about Maxim's...this is a hole in the wall, no frills, order quickly kind of place. As any one who's ever walked into a local hangout where you are standing there with Newbie written all over your face, be prepared, you will be the newbie, all the other patrons will have knowing looks on their face, and you will sheepishly sit down wondering if you will actually be served. Take breath, laugh at the situation, and be prepared to get some damn fine food. I ordered the "various cuts of beef" bowl and was quickly told to get #16 instead. The waiter had a Jerry Seinfeld-esque nature about him, so I complied. I had visions of standing in line and being told, "no soup for you!" Which, of course, made my friend and I laugh even harder.
So my rare thin slices of beef pho came and for all the new kid on the block nervousness, it was well worth it. Broth was tasty, the meat tender, the pho fixings fresh. My vegetarian friend ordered the veggie egg noodle soup which was equally good if you're into that non-meat sort of thing. In fact, they have a decent variety of vegetarian dishes. We shared an order of veggie spring rolls. Not as good as Rice Paper, but hey, you can't have everything! I look forward to becoming a non-newbie and trying their extensive offerings. Enjoy!
