| - Ever since reading about Scratch's opening in Table magazine, I have been meaning to make the trek up to Troy Hill to check it out. I am so glad this event created an opportunity to finally do so!
I knew Scratch intended to be a community oriented establishment, but I had no idea about the extent of their efforts to do so! Don's introduction was very informative and inspiring, and I applaud everything that Scratch is trying to do as a business. They work hard to source everything as locally as possible, in addition to holding regular events to support local nonprofit organizations (and apparently local musicians, as I learned that my friend's band was booked to perform here in a few weeks)! Locavores, take note.
I really enjoyed both of the complimentary cocktails, but the one with the oak aged gin and Draai Laag simple syrup (how cool is it that they make simple syrups from beers!) was especially delicious and unique. All of the bites were delicious and interesting, and their quality made up for the small portions. My favorites were the mushroom tart (that cheese though) and the achiote pulled pork bites. I loved the addition of pomegranite seeds to the pork, which gave it little bursts of sweetness and freshness to break up the spicy achiote.
My friend and I stayed after the event to participate in the drinking spelling bee, and we had a blast. The staff is really wonderful here, and I will surely be returning for a proper dinner, drinks, and more spelling bees!
