  • WHAT THE HECK IS THAT NASTY SMELL? I'm not kidding. I walked in the front doors today for lunch and would've turned around if I wasn't in a bit of a time crunch and needed to just order and eat already. The entire restaurant smelled like somebody hid a bucket of crab legs and forgot where they put it......last week. Just about the time you thought you might get used to it, you got another wave. Can you give a negative star for ambiance, because EW. My server today was super attentive and friendly. I got there right at 12:30 and the hostess had to seat me in the bar area because the manager just cut ALL the servers in the restaurant section. They CUT THE SERVERS AT 12:30? Smack in the middle of lunch? Who does that? Fortunately, my bar server (he may have been bartender, too...I wasn't really paying attention to that) was great. Many thanks to him for great timing on delivery of food and drink and immediate response when the kitchen screwed something up and getting my check out quickly. I ordered a cup of the soup of the day--an Andouille gumbo--and a half Cuban sandwich. The sandwich was fine--I've had that before and it's pretty decent for a Cuban in the Midwest, albeit very far from authentic! But the soup.... there was a layer of fat floating on top of it and now three hours later my tummy is reminding me of that. It was SO THIN that my first spoonful only brought up broth and a tiny piece of onion and a tiny piece of red pepper. I asked my server if there was supposed to be rice and he said HECK YEAH and came right back with a tiny ramekin of rice to at least give it a little body. I finally found a few little cubes of sausage, but suffice it to say that this is NOTHING even close to the gumbo you find anyplace that actually knows how to make it. I kinda feel like I need to give them my recipe that came straight from my crazy little cajun friend. Say it with me TASSO HAM, ROUX, TONY CHACHERE'S SEASONING....and don't be so stingy with the sausage! This is the first time I've been back here in about a year, I would say. I always really wanted to like this place. The interior is cute. I like that they brew beer. But the food has never been above a hearty meh for me. I've had so many food issues here--there was the time that I ordered the reuben 1/2 sandwich and soup that literally had ZERO meat on the sandwich and the time the chicken was served raw and the time they forgot to put the primary ingredient on the pizza.... The only reason I came was for the amazing and entertaining service. They cleaned house a year or so ago and all the really good professional servers were gone. (And I know that they did this in a less than classy way...) Based on today's experience, they still don't have their act together in the kitchen. And the menu hasn't changed one iota in a year's time, so nothing new is calling my name. Maybe I'll try them in another year. Maybe. There are far too many options in CU to waste my time and money here. It's a shame to squander the best location in town.
