I was searching for a place for a cheap massage after lunch and most places within the same area did not offer $20 massages for an hour like chinatown does, but New Life did so I called to try to make an appointment for 2:30pm but the earliest they had was 3:10pm. I took it.
They called me 10 minutes before my appointment to confirm and I was running 10 minutes late and it was obvious through his tone and sighs that they were booked and I would make them fall behind, so I offered to cancel but he allowed me to come 10 minutes late.
We came and the masseuse started on me promptly and he was really strong. Maybe a bit too strong at points and I even coughed at one point when he was applying too much pressure around my neck when I was faced down. I ended up being sore around my neck and shoulders for a couple of days since he applied so much pressure there and kept going back. But at the same time, I have a lot of tension in those areas because of my work, so he probably was working to rid the knots.
I've tried a few foot spa/reflexology places and most of the time, the experience isn't great but isn't horrible. I enjoyed my experience here the most because the workers didn't converse amongst themselves during the duration of the massages. They also didn't have their phones ring and didn't pick up and calls. Another plus is that their hands didn't smell like cigarettes! These are pluses for me since every other place I've gone to has workers that do at least one or all of these things.
But!!! My friends masseuse was trying to clear the phlegm from his throat a few times though, and it sounded kinda gross and I got a bit nervous some spit would come out or something but I guess it was fine...
Another plus is that many, if not all, reflexology foot spas don't include hot stones or hot towels in their $20 massages anymore. Other places either add it for an extra charge or they increase the price of the $20 massage altogether. This place does both!!
I would definitely recommend this foot spa to my friends and family, which I've already done. :) Just don't be afraid to speak up if their applying too much/too little pressure.
Another point I want to stress is that it's not wrong for these people to expect at least a $10 tip for the work they're putting in. Think about how many people they go through in a day for only $20 for an hour of work. Even if you tip $20 on top of the price, it's still only $40 total for an hour of someone massaging you. Many places charge $1 per minute and expect a tip on top of that so this is a steal and you should think about how hard they work before complaining about the tip sign or about them asking for at least $10. We live in a tipping industry and some people get by with their tips alone.
