| - 1. Front desk was chronically understaffed at peak hours. This means that during peak checkout hours 8:30-10:00 am, there were at MOST 2 people working at the desk. Same at peak checkin from 4:00-6:00 pm. I can not understand this. There was always a long line of frustrated looking guests during these hours, and god forbid a guest staying at the property needed anything from the front desk--totally impossible. Of course, then at non-peak hours like lunch time, there were often 3 or 4 people on the desk and no guests trying to get service. It seems like an obvious and easy thing to fix. When a guest finally did get to speak to someone (typically after a 15-20' wait), the people were generally very nice. I felt sorry for them--it wasn't their fault that the desk was so unbelievably understaffed.
2. I asked for a quiet room when I checked in, especially since I was staying for an extended period. I was given a room where construction started directly across the street very early in the morning on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday. I had no way to know about the construction when I checked in on Friday and the front desk acted as if the construction was something they had never heard of, even though it is directly across the street from your hotel. Disappointing and definitely detracted from my stay because I did not get a good sleep for 3 out of the 5 nights of my stay.
3. The blackout curtains were designed by someone who never actually used them. They do not work because they are smaller than the window space. So it is no surprise that light comes in all around the edges. For blackout curtains to work, they need to be bigger than the window they cover. This was another disappointment.
4. The hotel overall lacked any gracious feeling--not even water was offered at the front desk e.g. a cooler with some mint or orange in it, no fruit bowl, a lobby space that is so cold and uninviting that no one actually sits in it. Guests walk through the lobby and look at the seating as if they wanted to sit but it was so unappealing that they just kept walking. I can't blame them.
5. One day housekeeping never came. It wasn't a big deal but was surprising.
This is one of the worst Fairmont hotels I've experienced. Very disappointing. I hope they make some changes. The location is OK, not amazing, not terrible--it's a solid 15' walk to the old town and a good 10' to CentreVille. The hotel therefore needs to be better than mediocre if they want people to find it attractive.
