| - I was a member when it was still Gold's Gym around 2011 and cancelled after moving across town. After moving back I joined again in 2013. I was considering cancelling not long after due to the poor quality of the gym but was promised that with the transition of EOS coming soon, they would be making numerous improvements. I decided to wait it out and see how the new company did. I have been thoroughly disappointed and cancelled today. The only improvements have been a new coat of paint and their logo changed out. They did finally get new weights (dumbbells and barbells) but this took almost a year. Here's my breakdown.
Negatives:
1 - The gym is filthy and it was not always this way. I remember 2 or 3 years ago constantly seeing a cleaning crew working. Not anymore. If you set your bag down expect dust bunnies and hair to be stuck to the bottom of it. I get a gym is not always the cleanest place, but it is really unacceptable here.
2 - Broken machines and old equipment. The smith machine was broken for months and months, which is ridiculous as many people use this and some do their entire workouts on this machine alone. Just the other day I counted about 5 or 6 broken treadmills, about a third or more of them. Yesterday I tried an elliptical and the cup holder was broken, so I moved to the next machine, which rattled so much it was shaking, so I finally went to the women's gym to find yet another broken bike. From my experience they are in no rush to get the equipment back in working order and what does work is so outdated (torn pads, lose and squeaky, etc.). Again, they got new weights and two 5-stack jungle gyms, but this is not enough to make up for all the other issues.
3 - Staff - The staff does not come across as friendly or helpful and no one seems to be taking note of issues around the gym. Other gyms I've been to have their team walk around periodically to check cleanliness, working order of equipment and making sure other gym members are not violating rules (such as not throwing your 90 lb. dumbbells after your set and almost hitting the person next to you).
Positives:
1 - It is cheap, but you get what you pay for. If you don't mind the issues above and want a cheap option, this would do, but LVAC seems comparable in price. I'd be happy to pay double or triple and have a clean functioning gym.
2 - Women's only gym - This is a nice feature, but with equipment being limited to 1 or 2 of a kind at the most and many machines not working it doesn't end up being useful.
