I've always kind of been intimidated by this place. There's a few reasons:
1. Its obnoxious right-central tourist-trap location
2. Loud boisterous cheering of male sports fans inside
3. Its old and dated look, exterior and from what I could see before going in, interior
But it being one of the oldest pubs in Toronto (and if I remember correctly, they still have that god damned Moose outside as well), I guess it's a given.
Surprisingly, I went here on a date. A first date. It was a last ditch attempt at not finding anything open in the city (From Queen to College) after 10 p.m. on a Monday night. And I wasn't impressed. But then I ate the food...
And well, the date? It set my expectations for the rest of the relationship. Maybe I'll blog about it one day.
WE ATE/DRANK
I think I had Heineken. Surprisingly, I no longer like Heinkenen as much! Beer obsessed date finally made me realize the skunky taste of Heineken and I realized many years later, that I liked Heineken, not necessarily for its taste, but the travel memories associated with it.
As for food, it is all about that chicken souvlaki plate. It's better than a few joints on the Danforth. The souvlaki is fresh and tender and and you will get massive portions of potatoes and rice on the side. You won't go home hungry, that's for sure.
OBLIGATORY CATCHY REMARK
Don't give this dodgy looking bar the "sheaf" (it's supposed to sound like shaft. I'm trying ok?!). The place to be if you are watching a game. And definitely the option for eats after 11 p.m. downtown that's open because surprisingly, you'll be hard pressed for other options.
