  • We are writing this review in hopes of POLICY Changes with The Animal Foundation. If there are no changes in the near future, we will escalate our story to those that can help increase the pressure. Sometimes being a Good Samaritan doesn't PAY, but this Samaritan won't stop until a BROKEN policies are changed. THE STORY: A sweet Miniature Apricot Poodle showed up in our garage one evening. We took her in, fed/cared for her, etc. She had no tags and we didn't think she had been groomed/cleaned in at least 6 weeks. More reason to think she was either abandoned or won't be claimed. We decided to contact North Las Vegas Animal Control the next day to see if she had a microchip and find her owner. His scanner wasn't working and said he will take her and they can scan her and she will then be taken to the "Animal Foundation" where we can later adopt her if we choose. We can adopt her after a 3 day hold to see if she isn't claimed and we will have first access to adopting her. We don't have other animals nor did we know the process when calling animal control nor did we even know about The Animal Foundation up until this point. After numerous calls/messages to the The Animal Foundation, the first guy told me she won't be available for adoption until Tue morning. However, I had to call back to get the cost of adoption and other info I missed, and another gal told me she will cost $200 to purchase (includes spaying, microchip, shots). WOW! $200 and no discount even for finding/taking care of the animal. Our loss and their gain. She also told me that she will be available for adoption on Monday, not Tuesday! So, if I didn't call back and ask questions again, would I have known? The story gets better. They also told us that all animals are "first come, first adopted" EVEN IF someone finds the animal. They don't hold animals, nor take a deposit to hold animals, etc. even for the families that find the animals. This is NOT Right. I proceeded to ask questions like "so you are telling me that I find a dog, do the right thing and help you try to find the owner, but I can't be first to adopt the dog?" or "If I'm driving to the Animal Foundation and I tell you guys I'm on my way (take time off of work or whatever) to be there to adopt the dog we found/cared for, that you can adopt the dog to another person/family as I'm driving there because you won't hold the dog for us?" ALL Their reply: "No, we don't hold animals, it's first come, first serve EVEN IF you find the dog...Sorry...that's just our policy..." Well, this policy is not right and should be addressed. As I was driving to the Animal Foundation, "Apricot" got adopted by someone else (just as I thought). No sympathy from the employees and our family was DEVASTATED!! I was upset/crying that I wanted to speak to a manager about this so called ridiculous policy of theirs. The best response from Brenda was "this is our policy and we have had others say they would adopt the animal and not show up" in which we told her it's a policy that needs to be changed, especially for families that help find/care for the animal(s). She offered $50 off our next adoption if we choose to adopt. Why would we give this Foundation our money on a future adoption when we wanted Apricot and because of their broken policy, we no longer have her as part of the family? The story gets even better... When my husband found out that they adopted the dog as I was going to the Animal Foundation, he contacted Brenda again and they discussed the issues with their Policy and asked her to take this to the Board for future changes. He said for our loss and their gain, we basically don't have a dog anymore and if another dog comes on our door step again, we will find the owners ourselves because we want no business in giving the Animal Foundation business. She informed him that on their website, we could have "register a found pet" on their website! http://animalfoundation.com/lost-found/register-lost-found-pet SERIOUSLY??!!! They told us that we could have kept the animal, reported it found/upload a picture, and hope that someone could have claimed her that way. WOW, just more upsetting news. To our understanding, all animals that are turned over to Las Vegas, Clark County, or North Las Vegas animal control find their way to The Animal Foundation. Henderson operates differently and does not have their lost/found animals go to The Animal Foundation. Shame on the City of North Las Vegas too for not being more informative on the process when an animal is found and taken to The Animal Foundation and Shame on The Animal Foundation for how they treat families that find/care for pet and don't have at least a 24 hr or deposit hold for the families that find the animals. Very disappointing and we hope this finds it's way to implementing new policies for families that have been or going to be in the same position we found ourselves in.
