| - Mr T and myself have pretty similar history interests, and when we found out there was a mafia museum in one of the main mob hubs around, it was a done deal. Let's pack up the inlaws and head on over!
The museum itself is housed in a beautiful historic courthouse, where many real life mafioso have walked around and attended trials. Cool bonus if you ask me.. The three levels of the museum are filled with information from top to bottom, there will be a lot of reading, plenty of photographs to view and quite a few interesting and unique artificats. Each level of the museum tells a (chronological) story, keeping a good flow and storyline going as you move along.
If you're interested in the era you will recognize many a broad subject discussed, but what's neat is that they will go deeper into each particular subject (or family or person) and emphasize their story with artifacts, lesser known pictures or videos, etc.
At one point you are ushered into a room to watch the tapes of a court hearing, only to find out you are sitting in the actual courtroom shown on the screen. Cool stuff. As others have mentioned, they have reconstructed the actual wall of Chicago's St Valentine's Day Massacre, bullet holes and all.
Though placed in Vegas, 90% of what's discussed focuses on the mafia as a whole- which is positive as well as negative. Personally I would have loved more information about the area and history of Las Vegas (mafia).
They do a great job in cutting the walls of reading and photography sections with interactive, fun stuff. There are plenty of videos to watch, picture booths, playing with Tommy guns, taking an interactive shooting lesson with a (video) non- working revolver and there is even a section dedicated to mafia movies and TV shows. As a lover of the Sopranos series it was fun seeing the late "Tony Soprano's" leather jacket worn in many scenes.
In a city touting many sins, I was happily surprised to find an educational break in my day. First and foremost this is a museum; if you are not up for standing, walking, reading and learning, then this is not the place for you. Skimming through will be a waste of time and money, and I feel you would leave very unsatisfied.
I have been to "a few" (read: lots) of museums in my life so far, pretty much all over the place, and this little gem in Vegas is one of the most well laid-out, entertaining and engaging ones yet.
