| - I took my son to see Dr. Smith following some abnormal skin changes on his forehead, including a scar which appeared out of nowhere, accompanied with headaches. I was unable to tell Dr. Smith about the headaches because he rushed the whole visit and didn't ask if there was anything else going on with him. He looked at my son for less than one minute total and told me that he refused to do any testing on him nor would he treat him. The reason he wouldn't do testing is because it would leave a scar on the spontaneous scar that was already there. It wouldn't be any bigger than what was already there, so to me this seemed very illogical. He also mentioned the pain as a reason, but my son has been living in pain for a year already as a result of whatever is happening on his head.
Dr. Smith told me that in order for him to treat him, it would have to get much worse, which is exactly what I was trying to prevent. The last thing I want as a mother is for my son's entire face to be permanently scarred. He couldn't explain to me why a scar would appear out of nowhere. I do know of one autoimmune skin disease that causes this, along with severe disfigurement if left untreated, which I mentioned. He claimed to have a lot of experience with this very rare disease, yet told me that this couldn't possibly be it, even though I have seen it start on someone else in the exact same manner. He then told us to try a topical cream that is used to treat eczema and psoriasis even though my son clearly does not have either of these.
When I was upset that a doctor would refuse to examine, test, or treat a patient (despite being paid for the five minute visit), he said I could take him to Phoenix Children's Hospital. I told him I called them and they couldn't get me in for almost six months. He then said they would call and try to get him in sooner. They never did.
I felt Dr. Smith brushed off all my concerns and treated me as though I was a child. I strongly feel he treated me this way because I'm a woman and I'm 100% certain that if my son's father had brought him in, the visit would have gone very differently. I think Dr. Smith is more concerned with making money through cosmetic procedures than taking care of people's health. He is arrogant, sexist, unprofessional, and unethical. I question his ability as a doctor and wouldn't recommend him to my worst enemy. I quite honestly think his license should be revoked.
Edit: After further contemplation, I am even more outraged by this doctor's refusal to consider my son as a patient at all. There are several causes of unexplained white patches of skin, some of which are quite benign, none of which this doctor was willing to consider. Additionally, the package insert for the topical ointment prescribed says do not use on face. For both of these reasons, I have decided to report him to Arizona's medical board and I urge others with similar experiences to do the same. His behavior was unethical and immoral and I hope to prevent future patients from similar malpractice experiences.
