| - "So should we go to the Neon Museum during the day or night" asks my bud.
"Seriously?" my only response.
A long pause then, "the lights are probably only visible at night right?"
"Duhhhh" SMH.
DO THIS! Take an hour out of your trip to learn a bit of Vegas' iconic history and while you're at it, help support the restoration efforts of this one of a kind museum. All tours are led by very knowledgeable, entertaining, and personable guides. Ultimately, everyone in my party agreed, this was one of the most memorable activities of their Vegas vacation.
What will you learn? Some tidbits:
-- They originally used radioactive gas to make various colors in the signs.
-- A woman designed the "Welcome to Fabulous Las Vegas" sign in 1959.
-- The Las Vegas Scenic Byway Plan requires every business on Las Vegas Blvd between Washington Ave and Sahara to incorporate 75 percent neon in all their signage. Everything from the Stratosphere to Elvis wedding chapels, payday loan businesses and pawn shops, strip clubs and even 7-Eleven.
-- The Moulin Rouge Hotel and Casino opened in 1955 was the first non segregated casino. Closed the same year, it sparked a movement to integrate all Strip casinos in 1960, four years before national segregation ended.
Notes:
--Tour length: 1 hour (guided tours only). You will stand the entire time. Flat gravel surface.
--Group size: 20 max.
