| - Braddock's is a nice downtown venue that serves very good food - I would certainly recommend it as an excellent pre-theater dining option.
I selected Braddock's because of its location - Heinz Hall is on the next block. The restaurant is also near the Byham Theater and the Benedum Center. There is a convenient city parking garage directly across 6th Street, where event parking was a very reasonable $7. The restaurant itself is directly inside the very pleasant Renaissance Pittsburgh, complete with an old-fashioned lobby.
While the restaurant uses the term "Brasserie," there didn't seem to be all that much French or Belgian about the establishment. Most dishes are generally very good American-style options, mostly on the order of a steakhouse. They did offer a french onion soup and bouillabaisse, as well as steak frites. The steak options were cooked well and the filet mignon was very tender. They did use a fair amount of bearnaise sauce, however, which made the dish feel a little heavy and somewhat dated. The mashed potatoes were good, although not particularly inspired, while the asparagus was maybe a little limp. The portions here are very generous here. I ordered a caesar salad as a starter, and there as no way to finish the massive plates of green. The dressing was excellent, however, and clearly made in house, with fresh notes of lemon. There was certainly no possibility of dessert.
The cocktails were very good, maybe the highlight. I had a well-made Martinez, while my table-mates enjoyed the whiskey smash. The service was very, very good. The server was friendly and responsive, and the food arrived quickly. The manager even stopped by to ask whether we enjoyed our meal. Before the salads and appetizers, the server came by with complimentary bread and butter. The bread was a very good, if not superlative, baguette and the butter was served perfectly - at room temperature and generously salted.
Since this restaurant is in the lobby of the Renaissance, you should know that the bathrooms are on the second story. There is an elevator in the lobby (as well as a lovely staircase) to provide access, but if you have limited mobility, you should note that the bathrooms are a bit far away from the dining area. The bathrooms themselves were spacious and very clean - I suspect they are also used for function rooms on the second floor.
If you are downtown and near the theaters for dinner, Braddock's is a great option. You will enjoy an excellent drink, good (if not all that adventurous) food, and a very nice, unpretentious atmosphere. Enjoy!
