| - Coming from southern California, I have had the opportunity to try many different Mexican restaurants and I have to admit Gallo Blanco Cafe does have a unique flare. I went during happy hour and I think the food is much more worth it during happy hour since who can resist saving a couple of bucks. We were confused when we walked into the restaurant because we thought the happy hour only applied to people that were eating at the bar since we only got the regular menu. However, soon enough we realized that we were given the regular menu and the (H) symbol marked next to the menu item indicated that item was part of the happy hour, which lasted from 3-6pm everyday. You save about a $1 to $1.50 per happy hour item.
Service (4 stars): The server was attentive and very nice. He immediately brought the menu and put in our order for appetizers quickly. Our appetizers even arrived before our drinks since the bar was so busy. It can get a bit hectic during happy hour since there are a lot of people that come from the hotel and from wherever else. The tacos took a while to come but the waiter reassured us that it was on its way.
Food (4 stars): The only reason why I gave the food 4 stars is because it is a bit more expensive than the Mexican food I have had in the past.
I tried the (from most favorite to least) carne asada, cochinitas, and fish tacos. The carne asada is something I definitely recommend ordering since the flavors added to the meat was unique and the texture of the meat was perfect, not to chewy. The flavor of the carne asada tasted almost similar to the flavors at a fusion Mexican/Korean restaurants that I have been to in Los Angeles, Ca, where its salty and sweet combined. As for the cochinitas, I have had better elsewhere, the meat was not as flavorful. The fish tacos was not something I was expecting and I did not care for it since there was no explosion of flavors.
As for the appetizers, we got the elote, which means corn in Spanish, and guacamole. The elote is quite expensive ($4 for happy hour) and its an item that you can just cook yourself but I had to try it since I have been craving for it. There is mayo, cheese, butter, and paprika lathered over the grilled corn. The corn was also a bit dry/overgrilled. The guacamole was yummy and came with a lot of chips. If you prefer to add more spiciness to the guacamole, I recommend squeezing a few drops of the home-made green salsa that is given on each chip with guacamole.
Ambiance (5 stars): Nice decorations and gets kinda rowdy during happy hour since there are many people trying to talk over the loud noise. The restaurant is located adjacent to the hotel lobby.
Overall, I would come back again if I am ever in town.
