  • It's been a while since I've been to Meat & Potatoes, but I've been dreaming about going back since my first visit about a year ago. I made a Saturday night reservation too last minute and ended up in a later time slot than I would have liked (somewhere around 9 or 10 p.m.--I headed there after the symphony instead of before), but when I showed up a little early, they had no problem seating my party of two. The place has a cozy, romantic vibe; if rustic chic is a thing, that's a fitting term for the décor. I had the soft shell tacos (soft shell crab, pickled carrots, cucumber salad, mint, cilantro, Thai chili sauce; $14) and Sgt. Peppers Old Fashioned (Bulleit bourbon, black pepper, thyme, lemon, whiskey bitters; $9), both of which made the most of the many flavors involved. While I'm not much of a cocktail person, I do love a good Old Fashioned, and they did it justice. Ultimately, it was probably for the best that my reservation was nudged out of peak time, because the relaxed atmosphere and attentive-yet-casual service ended up being just the right mix for the end of an evening.
