  • My complaint is with the ER department, one nurse especially - Erica the triage nurse. I checked my 19 year old daughter in at 7:19 pm on March 8th, she was in excrutiating pain to the point her feet were going numb and she was dragging her left leg as she walked. I understood it was shift change and there would be a little bit of a wait. When Erica triaged my daughter, she informed Erica that her pain was at an 11 and she could barely feel her feet. Erica told us to take a seat and she would be called back. Then Erica made her 'airplane' speech to the waiting room about it being shift change and that people would be seen according to their acuteness. Understandably, but who determines the level of acuteness? Erica, of course! So after sitting there for 3 hours and my daughter crying due to her pain, I approach Erica and explain to her that my daughter is in pain and how long is it going to be. She then gives me her bullshit smile (I guess this was her customer service attitude) and states there are still two people ahead of her and they are taking them according to their level of acuteness, hmm as I stated earlier, who determines this? During the 3 hours we sat there, I watched Erica pick and choose those that would go back right away. I would play the race card, except there was a caucasian young lady that had been sent there from UMC due to her needing a blood transfusion because of internal bleeding, she was waiting as long as we were. People started coming in in wheelchairs and really performing dramatically about their pain. Erica would take these people right back. One girl she took right back as she performed dramatically, came out from the back about an hour later all chatty and laughing with her family and friends in the waiting room. As much pain as she was in going in, but in an hour she was able to walk out and look as if nothing was wrong with her. An older lady came in with a young man, signed in and sat down. About 5 minutes later, an RN stuck his head through the door and called their name loud enough for only those sitting next to them could hear, he beckoned for them to come back. They weren't even triaged. I am guessing it was some family members, they did look alike. After 3 1/2 hours, my daughter was called back for blood work and to be informed there were no beds and she would have to continue to wait in the waiting room. I guess I should have put her in a wheel chair and have her act dramatically. Of course, she was in too much pain to put on a show. When it was all said and done, we finally left at 4:45 AM with two prescriptions. After speaking with a PA, the doctor finally came in about an hour later to talk to us for less then 5 minutes. Of course, my insurance will be charged for everyone involved that night. I have never been so appalled at the treatment of the staff, or shall I say the triage nurse, Erica. She is so full of bull and she thinks she can pass it off as being customer friendly. I have one question for the ER, who determines the level of acuteness of the patients? I hope we never have to go back again to that ER. I am forwarding a copy of this complaint to Councilman Ross' office and everyone else that I feel needs to know about this ridiculous treatment.
