| - I've been member for years and there are good things about the club, and some truly not so good things about the club.
The good: 24 hour access is great. You can pick your time to work out, or if you suddenly wake up early, you can go to the gym. They have a lot of equipment available. Some of it is from the Stone Age (rowing machines) and last year they finally invested in some new bikes, elliptical, etc. They have a lot free weights and weight machines as well. The locker rooms are generally clean, except that it gets used heavily and there are slobs in the world. So two or three slobs go through right after the cleaning is done, and you're back to square one. The pool is SHALLOW. For exercise classes almost too shallow. Fine for lap swimming and walking though. As other have said, classes are great.
The bad: Trainers. They are all independent contractors, so the good ones have a full slate of clients already. The not so hot ones are usually the brand new, 25 years old who, well, lack experience and supervision to do a good job. So they aren't very good, lose their clients and leave. Read in, high turnover.... I went through three not so hot ones in a row. One talked about her boyfriend non-stop- every session. (like I cared - I'm there to work out!), The next had no clue how to work around some injuries, so I never broke a sweat, and she would bad-mouth her other clients. The third one had every person doing the same workout she came up with all day - whether it was working what you wanted or not. So forget it if you need or want a trainer. I don't think anyone supervised these trainers. I was NEVER asked for feedback. When I'm PAYING for a trainer, I shouldn't have to be supervising them, saying, "you know you shouldn't tell me bad things about other clients." Trainers -very, very bad unless you get an opening with one of the long time people. I've heard the ones who have been there and have a full clientele are good, but as independent contractors, I have to say no one supervises the program.
The pool gets down right crowded at times with people waiting for lap lanes. Walkers take up a lot of the pool. They need to adopt the policy of the YMCA, where walkers are encouraged to split a single lane and share. It would free up more lanes more quickly. Or take the empty space just outside and put in a walking pool with current. Having a 'next number up' system would be good too, like a meat market - some people who are waiting for lanes in the hot tub get don't get one if another person is standing there waiting - kind of a mess in the pool.
Overall, you can expect some people not to have a clue about etiquette in the pool or on the equipment. I agree with the last review, that they need to verbally go over everything. Also, I'm not sure the owner gives too much of a rip about the experience of patrons. It took years of not having equipment work before he replaced it, so consider that.
