Never thought I'd like the California Hotel but on my last stay in September 2015 I found the rooms spacious, clean and comfortable. Note: the walk to the elevator might be a long one if you are unlucky enough to be at the far end of the hall.
Dining options were good with the new California Noodle House, Market Street Cafe and California Club...I tended to favor the local offerings in Aloha Specialties and the late night Oxtail Soup. The Cal's coupon book also includes the restaurants and buffets in the Freemont and Main Street Station so lots of selection there.
The casino was not as smoke filled as I remembered and I loved it!
The staff was very friendly...definitely had no complaints there.
Although there are no entertainment options other than the casino, the package (room & meals) was still a terrific bargain.
Note: there was some renovation in the casino which started while we were there...hopefully it will be finished quickly
