| - Observations of my first visit to Cleveland House of Blues, Mar 13, 2018 for the Eric Johnson show. I was with a fellow musician friend from my rock group.
We arrived at 630 PM and decided to have a drink in the lower bar. The drinks tasted good and came to 12 dollars, no big deal. I handed the server 22 dollars for the two drinks. He casually said "keep the two fives ?" I thought that is a quite excessive tip request, for a two drink order. I took my change back but did tip accordingly.
The show did start at 8 PM, which I felt was professional. Before I proceed, I want to be clear that the talent all evening was very good but the sound system needed adjustment. I noticed during a brief pre-show announcement - portions of the mid-range really needed tamed. It had a noticeable effect on intelligibility of vocals. In the area of 315 to 1K or so...
The FOH rig is an 8 box line array each side. We were seated in the center, near the front, of the balcony. The top two array enclosures were certainly sufficient coverage for that seating area. The mid-range 'honk' was observable in all areas, balcony and floor.
Considering what I was able to hear, there is enough horsepower driving the arrays and subs. And I imagine the drive(s) are quality pieces, and was likely dialed in with the proper testing equipment, but does need the (qualified) human ear touch on the FOH overall EQ. I imagine the drive(s) are password lockout. Separate main EQs, for "touch up" may be in place at the console position ?
Dismissing the EQ situation, what I heard is:
Drums - decent channel(s) EQ settings. Rack and floor toms a bit low in level. There were two overheads, which is good, but the audience missed a lot of the excellent technique on the ride and high hats. The drummer was top notch.
Bassist - the tone in FOH was very dull. I grasp the featured instrument was Eric's guitars, but the sound was like the bass guitar tone was turned completely down on the instrument. Perhaps that is what was desired (?) I wish I could have heard more differentiation between the notes. Bassist was an excellent performer.
Guitar - it sounded pretty good in FOH, and the mids issue is not as noticeable on a guitar, as it was on vocals. Eric is an amazing musician as we all expected to see.
The interior of the facility is quite interesting overall. I have read other comments on the sound system, and I think it would be of benefit to tweak the FOH EQ settings. If people could hear an A/B comparison of the before and after adjustments - they would appreciate the improvement. The installed equipment is undoubtedly able to sound awesome after adjustment.
