| - Gorgeous little space with welcoming staff but compared to Roselle and Nadege, Butter Avenue textures and flavours fell flat.
After tasting some amazing gelato at Kekou, we were wandering around Queen St and noticed the amazing delicate pastries and cakes in Butter Avenue window. After being offered a sampling of their Pink Lady, I found the earl grey mousse delicious. And I bought an Earl Grey canele and 6 macaron to try.
The wonderful thing about this little store is that there is an underground serene tea room downstairs. Its quiet and spacious for such a tiny store area. A nice little gem hidden from the busy Toronto streets. Also the staff here is very gracious, welcoming, and kind. They were helpful in describing the pastries.
As for the actual pastries and macaron... this is where I unfortunately have to say the flavours did not live up to the beautiful and artistic styling.
Earl Grey Canele - After trying their afternoon tea serving size of their Pink Lady (earl grey mousse), I was dying to try more of this flavour. The Earl Grey was described as being light in flavour. After trying Nadege and Roselle (all time fav), I was hopeful for Butter Avenue. The crust was much harder and thicker than Nadege and Roselle. The interior was less airy sponge but more damp and wet. From a texture point of view, it wasn't quite right. As for the flavour, I think it was too light and if anything, I barely detected any Earl Grey. Only a touch of tea flavour. Overall, not a bad attempt but I wouldnt order it again 3/5
Earl Grey Macaron - This looked pretty and had good feet on the cookie part. When I bit into it, I noticed that the maracon cookie park to be very crunchy instead of crispy shell then go into a more softer chewier almond interior. It was mostly dry meringue so the texture was off. As for the buttercream filiing, it wasnt bad but it certainly did not have the lovely Earl Grey notes I was hoping for. It had a dull tea flavour with no bergamot notes. 3/5
Almond Raspberry - Another macaron that had the wrong cookie texture and I noticed this time there was a large air gap in the cookie. As for the filling, it was very sweet and the almond flavour was quite potently artificial. It didnt seem very balanced as the almond overwhelmed any berry notes. 3/5
Pistachio - This maracon was a bit better ... it didnt have a huge air gap and was more chewier. The sweetness was very strong though and it had very little pistachio flavour. 3/5
White Chocolate Strawberry - This is similar to the almond raspberry. It was very sweet but it didnt taste of white chocolate. Just sugary and the strawberry flavour was quite light overall. 3/5
Cassis - I was told this was their strongest berry flavoured macaron and when I bit into it, I was expecting a strong flavour. It was quite light and no where as lovely as the Nadege ones. 3/5
Salted Caramel - This was their best macaron ... possibly it was because there was no buttercream filling so it was a strong caramel note. The caramel was buttery ... there was still the wrong texture on the cookie part but at least it wasn't a sugary one note. It was a bit more nuanced 3.5/5
Overall, great gorgeous spot but like its window dressing, its very pretty to look at but may not to eat sadly.
