| - Been craving cheesesteak for a while and it seemed that the only place I could get it were the chain places at the malls. Ugghh. I'd been so spoiled with great cheesesteak places in California (yes, I know, California probably doesn't make cheesesteak the proper Philly way, but they make it good) that I can't bring myself to Charley's to satisfy my craving.
I ordered a chicken cheesesteak with mushrooms. It had some flavor, but wasn't as good as the ones I got in California. The chicken was cooked, yes, but I'm used to my chicken sauteed a bit more, browned. I'll give them the benefit of the doubt, though, since I ordered my sandwich with out onions. My husband's original cheesesteak with Cheez Whiz was much, MUCH better. I'll order that next time.
French fries were very crisp and our son's macaroni bites were good. They're probably the same ones that all the other restaurants in Madison serve.
They cooked EVERYTHING to order, which made for slow service, but it's nice knowing that your meat or your fries haven't been sitting around for hours. However, we were surprised by the price. It was a lot more expensive than we thought it'd be. The portions were decent, but we've had fresh food made with local ingredients with huge portions at other places in Madison that were cheaper than Big Red's.
