| - I recently received word from Scotiabank that my personal information (SIN, account number, everything under the sun) was 'misplaced' on a CD somewhere in their Toronto branch. When I asked what they meant by 'we don't have any reason to believe it was stolen' there was no clear explanation. I went to the Macleod Trail branch to move my money to a less negligent establishment. Although I felt that Scotia's helpfulness was limited and disappointing, I see this as a systemic problem and not the fault of the employees at the branch (i.e. there's a major f**k up, they receive little information to work with). Nonetheless, I was given little to no incentive to keep bringing them my business, and by no means will I recommend Scotiabank to anyone in the future.
This unsettling incident aside, I have found the customer service at the teller stations to be mediocre most of the time. One teller withdrew money from the wrong account and said she couldn't reverse a $5 charge caused by the incorrect withdrawal unless I waited to the end of the month and returned with a receipt and my bank statement. Most of the time there is a general apathy among the younger employees: they are reluctant to answer questions that cause any exertion on their brains. Then there's the token employee-with-cold, wiping ther nose then counting your cash. When I went in to arrange switching banks, I had called ahead and the manager (Shelly) was aware I was coming. Although I was standing at reception just outside her open office door and had originally asked to see her when I called, she merely eavesdropped a while then ignored me. Call me crazy, but I feel like she could have come out of her cube to say "I heard you were coming - I'm very sorry for the error that's been made, so-and-so will be along to help you in a moment" and get that individual personally, then introduce you. To be fair, I 'don't have any reason to believe' she was busy playing solitaire.
N.B. The branch hours are very limited: they're closed all weekend which makes it difficult to do any banking if you work 9-5.
