  • Summary: No thanks. Being a fan of old Vegas, wanted to check this historical place out (built in 1906). Seems cool, refurbished in a kind of modern 1920's feel. Pit bosses dressed hip mafia style - suits and fedoras - which is a nice touch. Pit staffed with go-go dancers. Casino's got a good energy to it. Unfortunately the security staff could be better. Walked around to check the vibe of the place out since room was not ready, and got eye-balled by older security guy immediately. Turned around later and he was right behind me (way to be discreet following your guests). Other than being 'ethnic', I was not dressed suspiciously at all, wearing clean casual clothes (grey sports shirt and jeans - no 'gangsta' clothing whatsoever). Guess he didn't like 'my kind'. Later when bringing in luggage, same security guy showed up behind me and yelled "You can't have that here! Where are you going?" Where do you think I am going with luggage in a hotel? To hold all the money I plan to win at the craps table? Apparently it's against their rules to walking through a casino-hotel with luggage (really?) and guests are suppose to know. He even cleared the call over the radio like it's some kind of dramatic security breach. Maybe he wanted to pretend he saved the casino from an Ocean's 11 type heist. Room was old, tiny, and dingy, just like the rooms you see in old black & white detective movies (photos on Yelp are of their high-end deluxe rooms). Was traveling solo, but room would be crowded with 2 people (bed was almost wall-to-wall). Half-modernized with new beds, flat screen TVs, etc. but windows, fixtures, walls, are still old. Fremont Street Experience noises all night as it is very close. $22.60 'resort fee' when there is no pool, fitness center nor in-room coffee. Probably done to make up for the low-ball prices they offer to push listing higher on top of search engines. On a positive note, the front desk staff was very good. Venesia (sp?) especially was very professional and polite. In summary, if you want to role-play a P.I. in a 1920s film noir, you'll like it here. Else plenty of other options downtown at comparable prices after resort fee if you just want a cheap place to stay. I have no problems with older properties, as long as they are clean, have good staff, and treat their guests like they want them there. Other than front desk I didn't feel that here. Took my casino play across the street to Plaza/Las Vegas Club even though I stayed at Golden Gate - didn't want to be harassed by Walter Mitty security guy again....
