| - One of the best things to do during the Spring/Summer months is to go on a foodie adventure at a farmer's market
I feasted on a delicious chicken rissois (croquettes) with bechamel sauce dipped in a home made Portuguese hot sauce; one mini-latke (potato pancake) topped with sour cream and smoked salmon, and another topped with sour cream and mushroom; a humongous chicken sandwich with grilled zucchini, sautéed onions and red bell peppers in a soft bun; and to top it all off, a chocolate dipped strawberry.
This rating is a combined rating for the market at the brick building and the farmer's market across the street in the big white tent. The brick building houses the food vendors (prepared food, bulk food, specialty food, cheese/meats/seafood) and miscellaneous merchandise stalls (jewelry, Canadiana souvenirs, imported goods). You'll find dining areas inside and outside as well as entertainment from the street musicians; don't forget to drop a little something in their tip jars.
Here's where the two sites differ drastically. In the brick building you get a range of vendors:
- Those who are aloof and don't even look your way, even if your standing in front of their case. No "Hello, can I help you?"
- Vendors who swoop in on you as soon as you take a sample and pressure you to buy something; if I sample something and don't like it, I am certainly NOT going to buy it.
- Some are friendly and helpful but rush you along with your choices to get to the next customer.
- Then there are those vendors who are warm and inviting. They genuinely want to help you, offer you samples, answer all your questions and give you some time and space to make your decision (shout out to the awesome vendor's at Kozlik's and Churrasco of St. Lawrence).
The overall vibe at the Farmer's market in the white tent was much more relaxed, friendlier, with much more samples to try: sheep's milk products, protein bars made with cricket powder, Greek Yogurt, salsa and chips with a secret Filipino ingredient (it's patis shhhh, don't tell), and of course fresh fruit. No pressure to buy but lots of encouragement to sample, sample, sample.
If you're coming from afar I would recommend coming when the Farmer's Market is also open (http://www.stlawrencemarket.com/) so you can hit both places to make the most of your visit. They also have an antique market on Sundays 5am-5pm. Great place to spend your morning.
TIP: get there early before the weekend crowd arrives which is around 9:30am.
