RE: CCW Training - Safety Issues
I don't take reviewing a business lightly. These reviews are read by an enormous number of potential customers who want to learn from the experiences of others and make buying decisions accordingly.
THE CLASS
For 30+ years I have been a responsible gun owner. This review deals with their CCW class. The class is divided into three parts; a morning session with a focus on firearms safety, an afternoon session devoted largely to legal topics, and a range qualification.
THE GOOD PART
Tim Forshey taught the afternoon session. Tim was good in his knowledge and delivery of all things legal.
THE BAD and *UNSAFE* PART
For the morning session. Jon Antrim was the instructor. Over 20 students were in attendance. He asked if anyone had not handled a firearm and a couple of hands went up. It has always been my experience that CCW classes review how to handle a firearm safely including grip, loading/unloading, dealing with a malfunction- preferable starting with a blue-gun and then moving to an actual gun on the range. But the instructor only gave a cursory overview that fell far short of satisfying those basic requirements. Then after an hour he asked everyone to head to the range. Really? No training there as well, he asked that everyone (including those that never handled a firearm) to take a lane, load, and get in the low ready position. That's it. Unbelievable! A safe and educational class has to include assessing the relative abilities of the students and providing adequate instruction for those that require it. The new people were upset and confused. Unsafe!
SUMMARY
It's not clear what this gun club is thinking by putting someone who has never handled a firearm into a lane without individualized attention. It is unsafe to them and for the rest of us. There were 3 staff members for 22 students, that comes out to about 7 students per instructor. There is simply no way to maintain a safe range environment for less experienced students with this ratio.
ADVICE
- If you are a new or less experienced shooter, you would be highly advised to AVOID THIS CLASS.
- If you are an experienced shooter, TAKE INTO CONSIDERATION THE SAFETY ISSUES THIS CAUSES. There are many other CCW classes out there.
LAST NOTE
THIS GUN CLUB HAS HAD THREE FATALITIES ON THEIR RANGE. It's impossible to screen out all those that want to do harm to themselves, but for the safety of your students you need to implement changes.
