  • Listen, this is going to be an honest review from a dad who's part of a family of four. Woodman's is the cheapest AND best selection you will find in Madison. Can you get better selection elsewhere? Maybe, depending on the item, but you will pay for it. You will pay a LOT for it. Is there cheaper? Yes, but only if you like the couponing game. That usually involves 3-4 trips to various stores and limits your ability to get the exact item you want. I've been shopping at Woodman's for 9 years. I've never had an issue with people or service and outside of a sale/coupon, no store has beaten them in base price. Recently I wanted to get a rewards credit card to earn a few hundred extra dollars a year. Groceries are a HUGE part of our budget and we were looking at getting upwards of $350 a year in cash back. However, Woodman's does not take credit cards. So I did comparison shopping with Hy-Vee and Pick N Save. It wasn't even close. With our weekly grocery budget, we could have earned $350 cash back in one year. But to go to the next cheapest store to use credit, we'd spend on average $1200 a year more. That is the savings you get at Woodman's. As for the produce and people saying it's not good. There is a reason it's cheaper: YOU HAVE TO DIG THROUGH TO FIND THE GOOD STUFF. Farmers literally load their boxes from their fields/distribution centers and Woodman's just puts the stuff out there for you to sort through. Other stores pay people to do that for them, thus you pay more money. If you take the time to look through the bins, the great produce is there. Woodman's is great for gluten free, organic and rather odd/foreign items you'd want. Their liquor dept is insane and loaded and the selection for dry goods is unbeaten. The only real issue I have is the quality/consistency of the meat. 9/10 times it's great. But every once in a while you get a steak or some pork that is just not good. Not rotten or spoiled, but the taste is just not on.
