BBB Alerts Consumers about Ultimate Wine Run

October 20, 2016
The BBB is alerting consumers to practices of Ultimate Wine Run, operated by Aaron Scott. Ultimate Wine Run came to the attention of the BBB after the cancellation of a 5k event scheduled to kick off at Arrowhead Stadium on October 6. A letter sent to runners in the event stated that it was cancelled due to alcohol permitting and supplier issues. Arrowhead stadium confirmed that the event did not take place, but did not immediately return calls from the BBB asking for details about the event's cancellation.
During an investigation of the cancelled event, the BBB discovered issues with the charity listed on Ultimate Wine Run's website. Ultimate Wine Run's Kansas City event page claims that they donate to Achieving My Dreams Foundation (AMDF). AMDF's website is no longer active and has not been updated since November 2015. Their Facebook page has not been updated since January 2016. Guidestar does not have AMDF's 2015 tax filing. The BBB attempted to contact AMDF, but their phone number now goes to White Tax Services in California. The BBB has no current information on AMDF.
KSHB41 ran a story on the cancellation of the Kansas City Ultimate Wine Run event and could not reach the business for comment. Local runner Brandy Saunders said in an interview with KSHB, "I don't expect to get a refund. I checked my bank account this morning just to see if maybe they've had a chance to do that and I don't see it yet."
Ultimate Wine Run has an F-rating with the BBB. The Better Business Bureau of Central California has received ten complaints against the company, nine since the beginning of September 2016. The company failed to respond to eight of the ten complaints. The BBB has received reports from consumers alleging that Ultimate Wine Run cancelled 5k events and did not issue refunds. Some complaints alleged poor conditions during the event and difficulty reaching the business.
The BBB found several Ultimate Wine Runs across the country that had been either cancelled, changed venue or changed date. Sometimes the events could be pushed back months, such as their Denver event which was pushed from April to June. The BBB spoke with Krys Davis, founder of the Wicked Wine Run (unaffiliated with Ultimate Wine Run), about these kinds of issues. Davis stated, "This is not normal behavior for reputable race companies. Trustworthy Fun runs, for profit or charity, secure venues and proper permits for events before taking registration money from participants. A lot of problems like this arise if they start taking money before securing a venue or permits. That's not standard practice in our industry."
The BBB encourages 5K runners to investigate fun runs before giving money. Check with the Better Business Bureau for complaints and search out information and referrals on the business.
