I have been attempting to track down the Mac and Gold truck since last spring when they were sitting near Forbes and Murray in Squirrel Hill. It took me another 9 months to get there, but I finally made it when they went to Truck or Treat in Schenley Plaza.
I tested out the Buffalo Chicken Dip Mac and Cheese (Small- $8.50). It was the perfect amount of spicy, some kick but not overpowering. I think I would have preferred some bread crumbs over the tortilla strips on top, but they were at least an interesting topping. Good amounts of chicken and blue cheese as well.
The price was a bit high for the portion, and while I tried it once, I probably wouldn't come back. If I wait until I am in New York, I can get twice this portion and just as good (if not better) at S'Mac. I think the obsession with food trucks allows Mac and Gold to inflate their prices a bit.
My only complaint is that they now serve their Mac and cheese in cups instead of boxes. The toppings were really lopsided, and it was impossible to mix them up while walking, which is the point of a food truck.
