| - I have wanted to check out Bandung for a long time, because I love the tempeh they serve at Monty's blue plate diner and they get it from Bandung... So we ordered a lot of food, most of which contained tempeh!
First off, beer. Not a huge selection from what I saw, but If you are a fan of Magic Hat, they have 2 bottles here that are good and are the same price as their New Glarus, $4. I thought that was a good deal so I went with their Circus Boy heffeweizen. My bf had the Sprecher Abbey but then later had this sweet potato ale which was pretty unusual! He hated it, actually but I didn't. When first poured and still having a head on top, it was soapy tasting! He thought it tasted soapy, period end of story. But to me, the soapy factor went away when it sat for a few minutes and was paired with the mango curry dish. It really tasted like sweet potato pie, kind of heavy on the nutmeg and cinnamon, but it was a perfect compliment to the sweet, creamy mango curry.
For an appetizer we ordered tempeh sate skewers and they were the best part of the meal for me, and the only thing that wasn't spicy! Really delicious peanut sauce on these thick cubes of savory tempeh. We ordered more to take home with us, and writing this makes me think I should go eat them right now! Yum! This is the thing that will have me coming back to Bandung again, and the main reason for the 4-star rating.
For entrees we ordered the mango curry (which I really liked and would order again), the pad rum mit with tempeh which was really spicy, despite asking for it mild (I would hate to see what it would have been like had I not asked for mild, but I ain't mad at ya, this is just how Indonesia eats and I know I am a wuss) but was otherwise pretty smokey tasting and good, and a fried rice dish called nasi goreng which was tasty, though not impressive or special and also spicier than I was expecting. Basically, if you don't like spicy food don't come here for anything but the tempe sate. And if you do like spicy, this place is pretty fantastic!
The waiter was extremely friendly and jovial, but seemed a little spacey or something. Like they were busy, so I don't blame the guy, but he was inattentive at times when he was right there and empty handed and really shouldn't have been. But really, his niceness made up for it and the fact that I asked a couple questions that he didn't know answers to and he was very nice about going to ask questions of the kitchen even though he was busy.
The entrees took a pretty long time to come out, but again they were pretty busy. Though no more busy than Halong Bay usually is that time of night, and it took probably almost twice as long as my food usually takes at Halong Bay.
I liked the color scheme and the paintings, as well.
