  • Tiki Bars & Speakeasies are two of my favorite bar experiences and UnderTow is their Phoenician love child. December felt like a fine time to kick it in Phoenix with one of my besties, so I grabbed my adventure buddy and came down for a spell at the tail end of 2017. She and her hubs made us a reservation here on a lazy Saturday. I don't recommend trying to grab a reservation for more than 4 here. Quarters are tight below deck. UnderTow has room for maybe 25 people max, including bar staff. We had 5 in our group, and there was an odd man standing. This was no trouble however, given the layout of the place is what it is, and especially given that the drinkies here are out of this world. Located underneath an unassuming coffee shop, you'll find yourself transported to a dimly lit ship's hull, complete with interactive portholes! Dave O. was chuffed when one of our bartenders confirmed his theory that the space that houses both Sip Coffee & Beer Garage and UnderTow is a gutted Jiffy Lube. This didn't ruin it for his Ambiance Girl though. We're both observant and one of us is always pointing out things the other might not notice. I digress, descend the stairs at the center of Sip and you'll find a hostess who will take you to your seats. They DO take walk ins, but I do stress the importance of a reservation unless there are but two of you. Drinks here will cost you, but that's to be expected for a themed cocktail bar. These sippy sippies are off the hook though. Off the port bow, as in mermaid? Can it with the puns? Ok sure. I took time to read the menu (really, the menu is a short story. My bad eyes tried their best in the mood lighting.) and selected two drinks: the Smuggled Goods and Lei Lani's Volcano. Altogether I sampled 5 different drinks, and each swept me away. Cinnamon, cardamom, aged rum, pineapple, coconut, spiced rum, it's all here. They're also not weak in the slightest so watch out that you don't hop off a stool, lamenting, Why is the rum gone? Why is the rum always gone? Not that I did this. Don't give me that look. I behaved myself. The Greater Phoenix Area is a good time. It's not every day I find a Spea-tik-easy. Parking: Plenty in a lot attached to Sip Date Night Spot: Yes! Intimate and romantic. You'll cozy up to whoever you bring here due to the layout.
