Here we go: this is one of my many backlogged reviews because I suck and really should start taking care to write reviews at a more consistent pace.
My friend and I stayed here last November for a last minute 2 day trip to Pittsburgh. The Pens were playing and I had the days off so I thought what the hell why not? Of course I didn't realize the Steelers were playing that Thursday so the hotels downtown and in North Shore were outrageously priced. I was able to score this hotel for a good price and decided the Ubers to get around would be much cheaper than splurging on a closer hotel.
This Residence Inn is tucked into Bigelow and connected to a retirement home. It's very obvious this building was not originally meant to be an extended stay hotel, and I'm curious to know what the backstory was to it becoming one. The parking garage is easy enough to navigate, but there are no attendants so be sure that you keep your car secure and not to leave valuables in there.
We went up the elevators and were able to check in promptly. The receptionist asked if I had been to Pittsburgh before. While I know downtown and Southside like the back of my hand, I was unfamiliar with this part of town. She was very friendly and gave us recommendations within the shuttle's reach so we didn't have to keep Ubering.
I booked a queen studio, which was clean and ready for early check in. One of my favorite things about Residences is that even the smallest rooms have an ample amount of space. If I ever have to travel for an extended period of time, Residence Inns would be my first choice to stay in. The housekeeper was able to clean my room the second day after I hadn't left the hotel until 3pm. Much appreciated!
The breakfast buffet was more than I expected it to be. Most Marriotts that have free breakfast offer the same items daily. I do enjoy complimentary breakfast, but I know what to expected by now. This Marriott surprised me by having premium bread and cheese options to add to an already extensive bar.
If I came across another predicament like I found myself in last November, I would stay here again. I do prefer to stay downtown or on North Shore, but obviously that's not always an option. This is a very solid plan B!
