  • Extremely disappointing!! This facility? is filthy, the? staff is rude, and the animals are filthy (large amounts of dander and extremely oily fur - this is not normal) with a large percentage appearing to be sickly. Our family went in twice this week in hopes of adopting a cat. I was overwhelmed with the 50% or greater of cats in "each" room having varying degrees of eye infections. Some could not open either eye. When I asked mid-week about one particular cat, the helper/worker (female with long dark hair) said, "He probably got tagged." In both eyes? And oozing with infection and glued shut? We asked about seeing a special cat on their website and were rudely informed but the older blonde female that he was in one of the two rooms closed due to a fungal infection (ringworm). There is a vet and "all" animals should be examined, treated, and cleared prior to going into the cat rooms. All cat were dirty and oily; there appeared to not be any cleanup or medical care before being offered for adoption. Our family went back on the weekend (3/18) in hopes of seeing cats from the previously closed rooms (fungal issue) and finally adopting a cat; however, we were not allowed to adopt our final choice. The older blonde worker was rude - again. There are ways to answer questions and inform potential adoptive families about any issues without being overbearing. Extremely? unprofessional. I encountered a new worker on this second visit and inquired about the high percentage of cats with "running eyes". She pointed to an orange tabby and said, "Orange tabbies have eyes that drain." Well, the greater than 50% of cats in all the rooms with running, half closed, and fully closed eyes were not tabbies; that was approximately 2 cats. It appears they are ignorant or just make up lies in hopes that you will not press the issue. It is true that we were in the SPCA in the last hour before closing, but I would hope they would want to find a good home for a cat. We finally made our decision on an 8 year old cat. We were asked if we had dogs. We do. We have a 5 lb Maltese?. They said we could not adopt our chosen cat. He had been returned because of dogs. This may have been a lie just to bring the cat back or possibly their dogs were large or aggressive (pit bull). Who knows for sure. We had our dog with us in the car and offered to bring her in to see. She said (somewhat younger, short dark haired worker), "NO, all cats have been dog tested." I find this hard to believe as they can't seem to clean them or treat for eye/worm infections (who knows what else) before going into the room for adoption. Also, if they have been dog tested, then why was a family able to adopt him recently and need to return him? Good question, right? She said it was the end of the day and I would not be able to adopt him. There is no way our 5 lb Maltese could have caused any anxiety or aggressive issue for this 15-20 lb cat. Although our Maltese is sweet. This cat could have sat on our dog or clawed her and that would have been the end of any issue. So sad - we would have made a great home for this older cat. We went shopping for cat litter, special food, and a cat scratch bed prior to going to the shelter and now we had to go home broken-hearted?. Our son cried. The staff could have cared less that this cat is still in the shelter. Yes, the animals need to be adopted because the staff appear to not care. However, the animals should be healthy upon adoption and the staff should be helpful, courteous. Character and integrity seem to be non existent for these workers. There is no way that I could go home any night without ensuring proper treatment for the health issues. They should never have been permitted into rooms in their unhealthy state. I highly recommend a complete change in management and all staff for the benefit of the animals!!
