Sadly, my flat white expectations fell flat at Maverick Coffee. The setting looked ideal as the shop has a warm cozy feel to it. But as soon as I walked in I was surprised by how loud it was. I felt like I was in a bar at happy hour, not at a coffee shop due to all the people here talking with each other.
I got the flat white with the house-made almond milk. I was excited to try it out but I had high expectations for it because it was a whole $1 more to add (Vs $.50 to add regular almond milk). It came out swiftly and looked great with lovely latte art and a nice foam. However, the frothy almond milk was sadly the only thing I liked about the drink. The espresso was so overwhelmingly bitter! I could only take a small sip then decided to add some sugar. The counter had Splenda, regular sugar, simple syrup and Stevia but no stirring sticks to use. Since I didn't want a big glob of unmixed sugar right in the middle of my drink I decided to take it home and add my own.
Adding extra sugar didn't help at all. Now I had a drink that was sweet, but still overwhelmingly bitter. I had to add some vanilla powder, more almond milk, and froth that up to even make it remotely palatable.
If Maverick coffee is named so because they have unorthodox coffee it's true, because it is so unorthodox that you can't drink it as delivered!
