| - My daughter and I had some drinks and a light dinner at the 1912 Bar in the lobby of the San Marcos Hotel. We didn't stay as guests in a room at the San Marcos, so my review is for the 1912 Bar and the areas of the hotel grounds we walked around.
I had a Restaurant.com certificate for AJ's Cafe which is in the downstairs lobby area of the hotel. When we arrived we found that the cafe is only open in the evening on Friday and Saturday nights. So, we decided to sit at the 1912 Bar in the lobby, which was totally fine. I wasn't sure if I'd be able to use my certificate, but I was just happy to have some one on one time with my daughter and talk about her new job, so I wasn't too worried about it. I could always come back and use the certificate on a weekend night, right? There are only about 10 seats at the bar, and it was pretty full the entire two hours we were there. There are also lots of tables, some hi toppers, in the lobby if the bar itself gets full. Our drinks were great! My daughter had some version of a moscow mule, I had a strawberry basil vodka-something, with fresh mottled strawberries and fresh basil, it was so so good! The bartender was kind of new, I think, she was using a packet of drink recipes, which I really appreciated, because she obviously wanted to make sure she made the drink correctly. Boy did she! We followed up our cocktails with wine, and we shared one of the sandwiches and a shrimp cocktail on the small bar menu. The shrimp cocktail is pretty good, 4 nice large shrimp on skewers that are actually grilled, not steamed, served icy cold, standing up in a small mason jar on a bed of cocktail sauce and shredded lettuce. The cocktail sauce could use a little more zip, though, it was sort of bland. The dip sandwich we shared was a wrap version of a french dip, and it was super tasty! The au jus was on the salty side, though. More salty than flavorful au jus. But I dipped lightly, a little salt goes a long way! It came with fresh fruit which was also good. And I was able to use my restaurant.com certificate! Woot! Woot! Our bartender/server was also a very nice lady who worked really hard and was very attentive!
The mother daughter time was great, since we were able to really talk without a lot of background noise. Chatted with a nice guy at the bar who is a regular, and walked around the property because it's a really beautiful old property.
The not-so-good parts I personally experienced, but can't speak for my daughter:
-the bathroom door to the women's restroom is filthy. It's an off white color door and it's so dirty you don't even wanna touch it, I pushed the door open with my forearm. I probably should have pushed it open with my behind. The women's restroom door needs to be cleaned. The bathroom itself was a bit on the smelly side. It had that old musty water-pipey smell. A couple of scent sticks or vanilla bean fragrance would be nice. Some of the decor in the hotel areas look like it came from the dollar store? Cheap little glass rocks and beads with little candles sitting in the center? It doesn't have to be fancy shmancy, but it shouldn't be cheap looking, either. As we walked around the grounds talking I saw several hotel employees working, moving things, cleaning the property. They were all working very hard, and were very friendly.
We'll definitely be back! I look forward to trying AJ's Cafe and the Sunday brunch, on the patio, which is beautiful!
My 26 year old daughter was happy because she was able to do her poke-hunting thing on her cell phone, and said the San Marcos hotel is a gold mine for poke-hunting! She got to level 19!
