  • EDIT FOR CLARITY: This lame shopping experience was in like early Sept 2014, Just FYI. I just wasn't on Yelp at the time. But i have to go there to get something small and I'm dreading it, but can't wait for shipping right now, need it for a oopsie belated xmas gift. And that brings me to my crappy experience at GC... Also note that, when i was a kid i worked for GC at the 2nd busiest store in the nation in the Bay area. If i had acted like these sales ppl at my store I'd have been fired on the spot. Who the hell manages this place?!?! IT SUCKS!! I HOPE YOU READ THIS! OK. Here is my rant about this place. There are good ppl that work here, but NOT in the Pro Audio Dept. They have no clue. I've worked in audio, composition, and sound design for...well a LONG time. Crap I'm getting old. Just trust me, I don't wanna brag and be "That Guy", ya know? Anyways, I've been here twice. Once right when i moved here just to check it out, and once a month later when i needed patch cables for my home studio. The time i bought patch cables I was seriously, $ERIOUSLY, considering a major upgrade. I go to the most EXPENSIVE set of keys they have, start playing (and i'm an actual TRAINED musician). NOBODY comes to see if I want to buy the damn thing. NOBODY. and I went thru most of the patch banks and was in the keys room for at least a half hour on the same fancy 88 key MOTIF. So then i goto the MOOG Lil' phatty and it's not patched in. No biggie, I patch it in myself. I play that for another 20 mins. NOBODY. So, i'm over it, and i go to the counter where all the "pro audio/keys" salespeople are texting, and blabbing to one another about nothing job or customer related. I stand at the counter and one dude with a pissy attitude sees me, and acts like i'm "bothering him" by simply standing there. so I ask him about trading in my S90ES to upgrade to the new MOTIF, and possibly applying for the GC credit card. This should be like a salespersons' happy dance, right??? SO HE THEN TELLS ME, and i quote, "oh nobody uses hardware anymore." I was SO not trying to be a douche, but I really wanted to ask him what studios he's never worked in. INSTEAD of taking the opportunity to try to sell a 3500$ MOTIF to me, he points me to the, what, $400 Trillian software to me (Which is DUMB cuz it's only bass!!). So, I informed him that i own almost the ENTIRE EastWest Library and I'm very happy with it. AND that i ALSO use it in combo with my extensive sets of vintage and current keyboards and modules. Oh yes and i use both plugins and OUTBOARD gear. He couldn't give 2 shits and was super jaded. I will only go there to buy the occasional cable or pop filter, and just continue to buy anything important or expensive from my online retailers. I recommend American Musical Supply, Full Compass, and Sweetwater. I will never give this Guitar Center my "Big Business". All they are good for is ringing up cables, or pointing at stuff I don't need or want. OK. End Rant. Just to be fair, this was only my experience in the Pro Audio Department. The guitar ppl seemed to be hella cool and friendly. At least they smiled at me!!! If you want to spend money here..... just don't. well unless you need a mic cable or just feel like being treated like an idiot. Good Luck.
