We had a good time despite the 110° heat. Apparently this is the slowest time of the year according to one of the ride operators due to the heat. It really was like we had the place to ourselves. There are so many animals to see throughout this huge zoo. I didn't expect the variety or the size. There are birds galore along every path you take. The best part was feeding the giraffes and I also enjoyed feeding the deer and goats with my son.
A few tips: Purchase tickets through groupon (saved $9 per adult and $2.50 per child), bring water bottles, wear sunblock and take a hat or umbrella to shade your head. Wear comfortable walking shoes and wear light clothing if going in the summer. Take quarters for the food dispensers to feed the animals. Check out the baby animal nursery. Also take cash or be forced to use the ATM. Also, do the aquarium exhibits in the heat of the day because they are air conditioned.
Drawbacks: There is not a lot of shade on the walk ways. During these hot days many of the animals were in shade furthest from the viewing fences or inside their boxes/shelters just outside of viewing, especially the big cats. Also some shows are cancelled in the late afternoon due to the heat. Only one ride was open, which ended up saving us money because they all cost $3-6 on average. All rides, tours, and eateries only take cash so come prepared.
