  • Tonkatsu Kiyoshi is a small family-owned restaurant that can be easily missed if you don't know where it is. With a handful of tables and a few counter seats, it would be smart to call ahead to check how busy they are. Weeknights can be pretty busy for them. We've been fans since the beginning and are happy to support mom and pop shops. We usually get the Hire Katsu Dinner "pork tenderloin katsu" ($13) and the Ebi Fry Katsu Dinner "black tiger prawn katsu" ($16). All the katsu dinners come with rice, miso soup, cabbage slaw, and pickles. Apparently there are free refills on the rice, soup, and slaw. Be sure to ask though. I personally love the cabbage slaw since it's refreshing against the heavy katsu sauce. While you are waiting for your order, you can grind up your toasted sesame seeds into a fine powder with the provided mortal and pestle and mix it into the katsu sauce. We also add the Agedashi Tofu "deep fried tofu with dashi sauce" ($4), the Shishito Peppers "lightly fried and salted" ($4.50), the Panko Crusted Soft Shell Crab "breaded fried soft shell crab" ($7), the Ika Geso "fried squid legs" ($5.50) and/or the Gyoza "pan fried pork, chicken and vegetable pot stickers" ($5) to round out the meal for us and the kids. The Japanese curry dishes are pretty tasty and popular as well. They have pork and chicken options for that. One of their newer items that have been getting some attention is the Fried Musubi "served with teriyaki sauce and spicy mayo" ($3.50). I have yet to try it, but musubis are pretty loved in this house. Some of the desserts we've enjoyed have been the Melon Cream Soda Float and the Yuzu Panna Cotta (which I don't think is available anymore). Service is great. Staff is super friendly and it's nice to see the same people working throughout the years. The owner usually would come by to each table and say hello, but I haven't seen him the last couple of times I went. We're due for a return visit soon.
